Recreational and Competitive Programs Collaboration

In our club, sometimes we will schedule friendly games between some of our competitive teams and some of our recreational teams.

As background, our competitive coaches occasionally request friendly games within our internal league when their competitive schedules don’t provide enough matches or they just simply need some extra games.

At the same time, we recognize the value for our recreational players in experiencing games against opponents with a higher level of play (If both coaches agree and there is a field available, these games can also be played in a 7v7 or 9v9 field as applicable, instead of a 5v5 field). These experiences can be eye-opening and inspiring for those rec players who may aspire to try out for a competitive team in the future.

In this spirit, we ask that competitive coaches lend one or a few players to the recreational side to help balance the game and ensure that both teams have a positive and constructive experience.

Likewise, a couple of recreational players may also join the competitive side for a portion of the match, as both head coaches see fit, so they can experience the pace and structure of competitive play and get a real sense of what that environment feels like.

At Real Soccer Club, we have proudly taken some of our higher level competitive players to Europe, where they’ve lived and trained within professional club academies. During these international experiences, our players have been integrated into top youth teams, participating in training sessions and friendly matches that mirror the day-to-day life of local players of very high caliber. By organizing rec-versus-competitive friendlies here at home, we are striving to replicate part of that same developmental environment — giving every player, regardless of level, the chance to share the field, learn, and grow together just as they would in a top-tier youth system abroad.

We also are starting to invite selected rec program coaches to observe some of the competitive practices and even establishing some mentorship.

Finally, these matches can sometimes help the club complete older recreational age brackets and bring more variety to our internal competition, benefiting all players involved. Our coaches create an environment where every player can learn, enjoy, and grow from this opportunity.
